If either mom or dad is a runner, jogger or walker, or if they plan on taking baby places where they will be doing a lot of walking (zoos, museums, malls, urban sightseeing) a jogging stroller is an amazing gift. Baby care takes loads of time and dooms many parents' exercise programs, but a jogging stroller can be the equalizer. Most babies love the smooth movement they get in a running stroller, and they thrive on being... Read More »

If you want to give a perfect baby gift, one that will never wind up in a yard sale, consider writing to the baby about how things were on the day (or week) he or she was born. This does not have to be a complicated, creative, literate or poetic work of art. A list will work just as well as a sonnet.
• What was the weather like?
• What was Mom wearing?
• What did Dad do/say?... Read More »

Dinner should be the center of family life. Establishing good family rhythms, like eating together as a family at the kitchen table when children are still in diapers, makes it easier to maintain good family habits as kids grow older. As the giver of perfect baby gifts, you can help a young family develop the rhythm of family dinner by giving the gift of a home-cooked meal. Write a card with a menu, the offer to bring groceries,... Read More »

Nursing mothers love rocking chairs. The easy motion helps sooth their babies, and moms with sore backs and tired feet need a comfortable place to sit. What surprises most nursing moms is how much time they spend with their babies attached to them and that means hours upon hours spent in their favorite nursing chair. A good nursing rocker should have a padded arm where mom's elbow will cradle the baby's head, a lumbar support or... Read More »

Help mom and dad capture every moment of baby with a new digital camera. Focus on features appropriate for distracted people like new parents who are focusing on too many toys and objects that won't sit still. These include: auto-focus, auto-flash, auto-everything; a fast shutter to maximize the chance of capturing adorable but fleeting "baby-moments." sufficient flash to shoot in poor light; red-eye reduction (no one... Start a 529 College Savings Plan with any financial planner for as little as $100 and wrap the paperwork for baby (and parents) inside an educational toy such as a Baby Einstein board book. In 15 years, a college education at a state university will cost $100,000. Parents of babies are in no position to plan what they'll have for dinner, much less what's going to happen in 15 years. Yet, their children's college education... Read More »

The secret about baby gifts is that they are not just for babies, because as the cliche goes, "Babies don't need much." As long as they are fed, held, clean and warm, babies are usually pretty happy. It's the parents, and especially mom, who need but so rarely get, the extra bit of attention that says, "thoughtful gift." So buy mom a massage, put the coupon in a nice box or card, and wrap it with a small gift... Read More »

Learning responsibility for many kids, begins with the toy box. One of the great -- Duh! -- parenting moments is when you show up early to collect your toddler from pre-school and find him scurrying about with all his little buddies cleaning up the room! Rolling up mats, picking up trucks, wiping down tables, and there is your little darling gathering every block in the place and putting them neatly in their designated baskets.... Read More »

The toy in the corner that baby never uses is like a $20-bill that went flying out of one's hand on a windy day. What happened? Until your 7 year-old starts nagging you for days on end about his latest must-have, you'll have to decide which toys to buy for your kids. (Infant toys can be the toughest choice because you don't have much experience with your baby, yet.) The best way to not have unused toys spilling out... Read More »

Aside from being held and/or nursed, sucking is the most comforting thing to a baby. Baby's like sucking so much they suck their thumbs in the womb. Hence, you put an artificial (rubber) nipple into a baby's mouth, he sucks away, and you've got a quiet, content baby. Game over. But hang on, not so fast.
Similar they may be, pacifiers are not nipples and if baby takes to the shape, texture, feel of a pacifier before he's... Read More »
