Why do sizes fit differently?

Ok this is really starting to bother me… why is it that when you buy the same brand of clothing at different stores the sizes fit differently?  I buy Carter’s clothes at several different places and I feel like the sizes are different.  Am I loosing it or does anyone else find this?
