RE:Always having to hold my baby...
Have you tried using a sling/carrier? I like using the Snugli we bought especially for when we go out shopping, etc. This way, he's still close to you, but you have your hands free to do other things. Then, you can try keeping him in the sling/carrier, but setting him on the bed, in a seat, etc. so that he still feels comforted, but you can do other things that way. We also use baby bouncers and a portable swing. He can still see me and what I'm doing, but he has the freedom to play on his own. Hope one of these will help. :)

RE:Always having to hold my baby...
i use to hold my lil girl all the time when she was first born and she would cry whenever i put her down...how i fixed it is i would lay her down and let her cry and i would play some music..anykind of music it doesnt have to be kid tunes because some babys like other stuff like my lil girl loves rock music for some unknown reason.....then when she setteled down and stopped crying and i had the chance i would hold her...but as long as she was crying she would not be held...we are still working on this but she is learning very fast that if she wants to be held to stop all the crying and just wait until the chance comes.......goodluck with that i know that hearing your baby cry is one of the worst things ever to a mommy...its hard but i know that it has to be done
